 JikiharaMakiko started learning Odissi under Ms. Hamada Saeko in Osaka in 1993.

 

Inspired by its beauty and characteristic movements, Makiko started making her many trips to India over the years, and learned under Ms. Madavi Mudgal at Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya in New Delhi. She finished the 5 year course in 2000.
 
Since then she has been performing in Japan individually as well as with other dancers and has also taken part in many of the programmes organized by Kalagram.

Kawai Naoko started learning Bharatanatyam under Ms. Sakurai Akemi in Osaka in 1991.
 

She then decided to pursue her passion in the land of its origin, India.

Having been awarded ICCR scholarship, she joined the College of Fine Arts Kalakshetra in Chennai, India.

With her marriage in 1992, Naoko moved to Pondicherry with her husband and joined a 4-year Indian classical dance course at Pondicherry University.
 

Along with Bharatanatyam, Naoko learned Mohiniattam, a classical dance of South India.

 

During her stay in Pondicherry, Naoko also studied Sanskrit, Yoga and Indian Classical Music. She is proficient in Tamil, a South Indian language.

 

She took part in group dances organized by her teacher in various places in India.

In 1998, she earned her B.P.A (Bachelor of Performing Arts).
 

Having returned to Japan in 1998, Naoko started teaching Bharatanatyam at several culture centres in Nagoya. She has performed a number of times as a member of Kalagram.

She is currently residing in Hong Kong.

 

Takayama Mio  >>

 

 

TakayamaMio  was born in 1972 in Hamamatsu, Japan. She moved to India in 1989.

She joined the College of Fine Arts Kalakshetra in 1991 to learn the South Indian Classical dance of Bharatanatyam. She was awarded the ICCR Scholarship from the Indian goverment in 1992.

After completing the four year diploma course at Kalakshetra, she moved to New Delhi to learn the North Indian Classical dance of Kathak of Jaipur under the tutelage of Ms. Nandhini Singh, Mr. Harish Gangani and Ms. Anurag Verma at Shriram Baratiya Kala Kendra.

At the same time, she continued futher lessons in Bharathanatyam under Ms. Jayalakshmi Eshwar in Triveni Kala Sangam. She was once again awarded the ICCR Scholarship.

Mio returned to Japan in 2000.

 

Since then, she has been making annual trips to India to receive lessons in Kathak of Jaipur under Pdt. Rajendra Gangan at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi.

She currently resides in  Hamamatsu, and has been performing Bharathantyam and Kathak as a member of Kalagram.
